Recently have been told I look like Mary Ann from Gilligan's Island. I hadn't heard that in years, but that is a good place to start as to what I look like, although she had a better bod. I have three boys and have been married for 13 years. Born of a Navy family, in Hawaii, one Mom, one Dad, one sister and one brother. The eldest of three children. BS in Applied Mathematics. Consider Pensacola my home town although I moved every 2-3 years of my life growing up. Currently work in the aerospace industry in an engineering position while being a Mom. Of Celtic heritage and very proud of it.

What I Learned or Remembered in Karate This Week

  1. Eating a burrito or pizza before Karate class, in particular on Monday night basics when we are up and down the floor kicking and punching for an hour, is a bad thing.  Think, “I.Will.Not.Barf”
  2. I am not ambidextrous. Whoever attacks me in a parking lot really NEEDS to attack me from my good coordinated side… preferably with me using my left leg as support so I can kick with my right leg or punch with my right arm.  Just a little reminder to the bad guys…
  3. I am going to be emotionally damaged for life if I have to gouge out someone’s eyes with my thumbs.  Yes, I will be emotionally damaged in general if I am attacked, period; however, I have come to realize that if I have to put my thumbs through someone’s eyes, feeling their eyes split open or whatever they do, I will remember the sound and feel of that forever and it will haunt me, in particular when my better half is out of town and it is 2AM and I am alone in the dark, for the rest of my frickin’ life.  Blech.

LOL! I was taking judo for awhile, until I had to go back to working nights, and I remember thinking after one long class, "unless my attacker comes at me just so, I'm going to have to abandon judo." Cracks me up that I wasn't the only one to think that way!

You'd be surprized what you're capable of in a real self-defense situation. Muscle memory, from training and such takes over, and you do things subconciously that you cannot do on purpose. I wouldn't worry too much about having a strong side. Just remember eye, nose, throat. Forget the crotch, as usually it is too difficult to target, and most men react quickly to a jewel threatening blow. (how dirty could that sound?)

As far as popping someones eye. I wouldn't worry too much, as soon as your finger goes into their eye, they are going to jerk away. Hopefully unable to see so you can run, get help, or whoop them good.
Also, remember to scream like a banshee when defending yourself. Even if noone can hear you, the perpetrator does not usually know this. Oh, and it makes them wonder what the hell is wrong with you too.
In case you're wondering where I learned this crap, I once volunteered to be in the stoopid-man suit for a women's self defense class. And I have been in my fair share of fights over the years.

Little Joe, they keep telling me all this will start becoming second nature, etc. And I guess I believe them, but it's going to be a long time for me. A helluva lot longer than my measily 2.5 years. However, I did block a jab my bro in law was throwing at me in the kitchen a couple weeks ago. (We play box in the kitchen when we all get together. I know. It's juvenile, but it's fun.) I was very proud since it was an unexpected punch, so there must be some progress.

T1G, I think we all feel that way. Sometimes our Sensei will show us something new to do, in a particular attack and after he's finished, a couple of us brown belts will give each other a look that says, "yeah. Right."

I will scream like a banshee. No questions asked. I'm the loudest in the dojo when we spar anyway. (surprise) They want us to yell, it is good spirit, but also I figure if I'm used to yelling, when I'm being attacked, it won't be foreign to me.

Why am I not surprised they had you in that get up to beat on?! :) You're definitely big enough!
